  1. Costs
  2. Coverage
  3. Your other coverage
  4. Prescription drugs
  5. Doctor and hospital choice
  6. Quality of care
  7. Travel

See below to learn more about Medicare planning and questions to consider.

Cost: Ask these questions

During the planning process you want to consider:

  1. How much are your premiums, deductibles, and other costs?
  2. How much do you pay for services like hospital stays or doctor visits?
  3. Is there a yearly limit on what you could pay out-of-pocket for medical services?

There’s no limit on how much you pay out-of-pocket per year unless you have supplemental coverage. Contact us and we can help you find the right combination of plans to meet your needs.

Coverage

How well does the plan cover the services you need?

Coverage in Original Medicare

Medicare covers medical services and supplies in hospitals, doctors’ offices, and other health care settings. Services are either covered under Part A or Part B.

Coverage in Medicare Advantage

Plans must cover all of the services that Original Medicare covers. Some plans offer benefits that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, like vision, hearing, or dental.

Other Coverage

If you have other health or prescription drug coverage types, make sure you understand how that coverage works with Medicare.

Supplemental coverage in Original Medicare

You can add a Medicare Supplement policy to help pay your out-of-pocket costs in Medicare, like your deductible and coinsurance.

Supplemental coverage in Medicare Advantage

It may be more cost-effective for you to join a Medicare Advantage Plan because your cost sharing is lower (or included). Many Medicare Advantage plans offer vision, hearing, and dental. You can’t use (and can’t be sold) a Medicare Supplement policy if you’re in a Medicare Advantage Plan.

  2. Do you already have creditable prescription drug coverage?
  3. Will you pay a penalty if you join a drug plan later?
  4. What is the plan’s overall star rating?
  5. What will your prescription drugs cost under each plan?
  6. Are your drugs covered under the plan's formulary?
  7. Are there any coverage rules that apply to your prescriptions?

It is important to consider a plan that offers prescription drug coverage and also considering the out of pocket cost for your prescriptions. We can help find the right plan to meet your prescription drug needs, give us a call.

Doctor/Hospital Visits

Planning for doctor visits and hospital visits is an important consideration during the planning process. Ask yourself:

  1. Do your doctors accept the coverage?
  2. Are the doctors you want to see accepting new patients?
  3. Do you have to choose your hospital and health care providers from a network?
  4. Do you need to get referrals?

Doctors and hospital visits can become a major expense if you are not fully covered. Remember that Medicare only pays 80%, you are responsible for 20% of your medical bills. That is why it is important that you enroll in a Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage Plan to help assist with that 20%. We offer free consultations and show you all of your options.

Quality Care

Quality of care can vary from plan to plan. Make sure you ask:

  1. Are you satisfied with your medical care?
  2. How have Medicare and other people with Medicare rated your health and drug plan’s care and services?
  3. Have you spoken with a Medicare expert to adequately explain the quality of each plan?

The quality of care and services offered by plans and other health care providers can vary. Contact us and we can help you find the right combination of plans to meet your needs.
